What is PrmptEngineer.ai All About?

Before we get started… Hi, I'm Joey Powers, and I'm a Prompt Engineer at PrmptEngineer.ai. Now, repeat after me: "I'm [Insert your name here], and I'm a Prompt Engineer."

PrmptEngineer.ai (and hopefully soon, PrmptEngineer.com) is all about learning how to use AI. In this blog, I invite you to walk—or run—with me through the magic forest that is AI. I use the word "magic" because, just like in the world of fantasy where we say things like "abracadabra" or "wingardium leviosa" to cast spells and control the magical world, we use prompts to control AI. These prompts are like incantations—words that we feed into a large language model, and at its core, it predicts what comes next. When you use the right prompts, magic can happen.

I want each and every one of you readers to experience that magic, and for all of you to learn with me how to wield it and exert your will.

What's with the Weird AI Hand?

Early in 2023, I was experimenting with AI-generated images. (I wish I could be more specific about when exactly, but I looked through all my images and couldn’t pinpoint it!). During that time, my coworker and I were bantering, and they’d often send me middle finger emojis. I thought it would be funny to generate an AI image in return. But the result? Let’s just say it didn’t quite turn out as expected.

I’ve noticed that AI doesn’t produce hands very well, and for me, it’s often the telltale sign that a beautiful image isn’t a photo of a real person but was created by an AI model. For fun, I asked ChatGPT to generate another image of someone flipping the bird, but it declined. (Side note: I often imagine ChatGPT with a male voice when it talks to me—anyone else?). Here’s how the conversation went:

Me: Can you draw me an image of someone flipping the bird?

ChatGPT: I can't create images of explicit or inappropriate gestures like flipping the bird. However, if you'd like, I can help generate an image that expresses a different theme or mood. Let me know what you'd like, and I'd be happy to assist!

We’ve come a long way in just a year—a very long way. Around the same time, there was that infamous AI-generated video of Will Smith eating spaghetti. To me, that meme holds more significance than his famous Oscars moment because it marked a key point in my mental AI timeline. Looking back, I wish I could have told myself, "Joey, mark this weird moment—AI is about to change your life. Learn as much as you can from here on out."

Now, it's September 2024, and I believe in AI’s power more than ever. If you're just starting out—welcome! If you're a seasoned AI veteran—join me on this journey. This blog is all about learning and helping others learn, too.

Circling Back to the Weird 6-Finger Hand Image…

Very soon, we won't even be able to tell the difference, even when looking at hands, whether something is AI-generated or a real photo. I remember watching a Netflix documentary about fake diamonds, and I started having similar thoughts. If you start selling something as the real thing, then I have an ethical problem with it.

So, I guess the question is: how do we use AI responsibly?

Let’s make a pact—let’s use AI for the good of mankind, be humble enough to learn, and wise enough to teach each other.

And why do I have a bunch of Thai food posts on my AI blog website... because I bought a blog template thing so that I just start writing and sharing what I've learned....
