My Friend Asked: “What’s the Deal with AI Commercialization?”

I recently got a question from a friend: “What do you think about the commercialization of Artificial Intelligence across government, education, hospitality, and more? What are the upsides, the potential pitfalls, and how might we handle them?” Here’s my take.

1. Introduction: The New AI Gold Rush

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has morphed from a niche academic pursuit into a full-on commercial gold rush, fueling massive investments and headline-making controversies. Whether it’s government agencies automating administrative tasks, schools embracing “personalized” learning software, or hospitality companies turning to chatbots, AI has embedded itself in almost every corner of modern life. Startups and tech giants alike are scrambling for a piece of the action, often with an eye on shareholder profit rather than purely altruistic goals.

Take OpenAI, for instance. Once a non-profit with a mission to serve humanity, it’s now a “public benefit corporation” awash in private capital from the likes of Microsoft. Add in some financially based definitions of AGI and Microsoft monetized it's investment return at $100 billion. Is it AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) ? Thats somewhat academic, but if a machine is smarter than a human on almost every metric that using my human Occam's Razor and my 'materially correct' wet finger in the air then I think 'Yes'. Whilst some argue that the public-benefit label may have been diluted by profit motives; lawsuits from Elon Musk, Meta, and others underscore the tension between altruism and capitalism. Meanwhile, the U.S., China, and the EU are locked in an all-out race for AI dominance, each eager to claim leadership in what is now a trillion-dollar industry.

2. The Punchy Reality Check: Private Ownership Meets Public Impact

The blunt truth is that almost all mainstream AI today is developed by private companies or individuals. Full-scale public ownership in the U.S. is unlikely, though there’s a legitimate case for at least partial public oversight in areas like national security or policing. Critics see private ownership of AI as a breeding ground for ethical neglect and environmental harm—especially when billionaire-driven projects can leverage local communities without offering them tangible benefits and don'g get my started on the current political backdrop of the billionaire oligarch's bringing bribes (apologies) I meant gifts to Mar-a-largo.

A prime example is Elon Musk’s reported Colossus AI data center in Memphis the single largest AI concentration of processing power on the planet, that is home to thousands of power-hungry Nvidia H100 chips and requiring its own gas-turbine power plant ( The same Ai behemoth that he insensitively boasts that he'll double in capacity). That facility is allegedly said to pollute nearby neighborhoods, primarily affecting lower-income Black communities, with no clear plan for job creation or reparations. It’s a stark snapshot of what can happen when profit margins overshadow social and environmental responsibilities.

3. How AI Commercialization Actually Works

There’s more nuance to AI commercialization than just “Rich people doing what they want.” It follows a surprisingly methodical path that, when managed responsibly, can benefit society in meaningful ways.

Venture capital firms and public markets pour money into AI startups that show promise, accelerating research and innovation. Established sectors—like healthcare or finance—collaborate with these startups to integrate AI into everyday processes, delivering new features to customers at breakneck speed. Many AI services are then sold through subscription models, allowing clients to “rent” cutting-edge algorithms without huge upfront costs. Others rely on data monetization—collecting user data to train models and sometimes selling or sharing those insights with third parties. Governments also jump into the fray by offering defense contracts or funding large-scale AI initiatives, paving the way for public–private partnerships that can set industry-wide standards.

4. Where AI Is Making Waves

AI’s tentacles reach everywhere, and each sector has its own mix of excitement and apprehension.

In government, AI promises to slash red tape and speed up bureaucratic tasks, yet over-reliance on private providers invites questions about data security and surveillance. In education, adaptive platforms can tailor lessons to each student, but underfunded schools may find that the digital divide only worsens. Hospitality enjoys chatbots and seamless check-ins, although guests might long for genuine human contact. Healthcare sees faster diagnoses and more efficient resource management—until an AI misdiagnoses a patient or insurance companies misuse predictive analytics. Retailers and e-commerce rely on AI to deliver personalized product recommendations, but smaller stores can’t compete if they lack the funds to adopt these tools. Meanwhile, manufacturing and logistics benefit from robotics and predictive maintenance, at the potential cost of human jobs and over-centralized supply chains.

5. The Pros: Why Commercialization Matters

Commercial AI can be a game-changer when it comes to harnessing capital, enabling rapid growth, and driving technological innovation. Private-sector competition often yields more user-friendly products that quickly reach mainstream adoption. Countries with bustling commercial AI ecosystems also stay globally competitive, effectively keeping pace with rival superpowers. And while private companies chase profits, the government and citizens still indirectly gain from advancements in AI-based infrastructure, disease modeling, or disaster response. Moreover, well-crafted regulations can compel these companies to at least partially align with public values such as data privacy and sustainability.

6. The Cons: Social, Environmental, and Ethical Minefields

The dark side of unbridled commercial AI is a relentless focus on bottom lines, which can gloss over social and environmental costs. Mass automation risks laying off entire workforces with little corporate concern for how those unemployed workers will be retrained or supported. AI centers gobbling up fossil fuels might pollute already vulnerable communities, while Big Tech CEOs live far from the mess. Data misuse or biased algorithms can further entrench racial and economic inequalities. And in a sector where laws lag behind technology, it’s not always clear who bears liability when AI systems err or who is responsible when private interests compromise national security through foreign-owned AI firms.

7. Semi-Public or Even Nationalized AI?

Given AI’s power to reshape economies, it’s worth asking whether some aspects should be nationalized or at least semi-public. Proponents argue that such a move would ensure broader social and environmental costs are accounted for, direct some profits back into public coffers, and impose real ethical oversight. Opponents counter that top-down bureaucracy may slow innovation, and the government could accomplish its goals simply by enforcing strong regulations. After all, the U.S. has never been keen on direct state ownership of business, and attempts at partial nationalization might stir fierce political opposition. Ultimately, the debate reflects broader societal questions about whether AI should be viewed as a public utility, a private commodity, or some hybrid of the two.

8. Making It Work: Balancing Profit and Public Interest

Balancing the drive for profit with the need to protect workers, communities, and the environment isn’t a lost cause. Ethically robust regulations can force AI companies to address bias, data privacy, and sustainability from the start. Public–private collaborations, particularly in fields like health and climate change, can unify resources for public benefit. A massive overhaul of education and workforce development could mitigate job displacement by teaching AI-relevant skills and ethics from an early age. Meanwhile, data centers and AI infrastructure can be required to run on renewables, or at least pass stringent environmental impact assessments.

Where national security or vital public services are at stake, partial ownership or direct government oversight of AI firms might be the simplest way to ensure accountability. Communities should also have a voice, particularly when data centers or factories are built in their neighborhoods. Corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs can’t just be PR fluff; they need teeth, backed by laws or incentives that make robust community engagement mandatory.

9. Real-World Snapshots

OpenAI’s evolution from non-profit idealism to a “capped-profit” model reveals how market forces can reshape even the most altruistic missions. In the UK, the NHS’s attempts to speed up medical diagnoses through private AI partnerships highlight thorny issues of patient data privacy and profit-sharing. The EU’s proposed AI Act, which sorts AI applications by risk level, shows how lawmakers can attempt nuanced regulation—though it remains to be seen whether the act has sufficient enforcement power. And in China, rapid deployment of facial recognition sparks fresh debates over civil liberties, with critics warning that commercialization plus government oversight can easily morph into mass surveillance.

10. Final Thoughts: Danger and Opportunity

AI is a mind-bogglingly powerful tool, capable of improving lives and solving problems at an unprecedented scale. It can also exacerbate social divides, lead to widespread job losses, and pollute vulnerable communities when profit trumps ethics. Whether we should allow corporations free rein, impose partial government ownership, or find some middle road is the million—or billion—dollar question.

In the near term, common-sense solutions might include robust regulation, real investment in education and retraining, transparent data policies, and accountability for environmental harm. Longer term, debates about semi-nationalization or strong public–private hybrids may intensify as AI becomes even more integral to how we live, work, and govern. The commercialization of AI is here to stay, but the extent to which it serves the common good—or primarily lines the pockets of a few—ultimately hinges on collective decisions about ownership, oversight, and ethical responsibility.

I actually wrote a postscript—a P.S. to my long diatribe—and I’ve heard multiple variations of this warning: “AI will take your job,” or, “AI won’t take your job, but someone using AI will.” Yes, an AI tsunami is coming, and it may take your job. The question is, how will you prepare for it?

My advice is simple: learn how to use AI in every aspect of your life—your work, your personal projects, everything. Engineer efficiency into your daily routine, and if you don’t know how, ask ChatGPT. If my 75-year-old mother, with zero artistic training, can scribble and sketch on lined paper, then upload it to Midjourney to create an amazing T-shirt design, so can you. AI is the tsunami, but it’s also the great leveller. If you’re not afraid of it, you might discover latent talents you never knew you had. Don't 'Just do it' GO CREATE IT!
